Our history and our values
Godeval winery
The Galician company Bodegas Godeval produces their wines today with the same effort and commitment with which they began, 30 years ago, to recover the white variety godello, under the Valdeorras Apellation. At its facilities, located in the historic setting of Xagoaza (O Barco), began their recovery godello variety project in the 80s, using part of Monastery of Xagoaza, a medieval building, as a winery and planting own vineyards, to control everything in the wine process and follow the idea of “that wine is made in the vineyard”. Over time and for continue coveringtheir customer demands, they increased its plantations and also the facilities. The new winery has been designed to become a viewpoint to the valley, which combines tradition and modernity.
The way we started
Bodegas Godeval was founded in 1986 by making a first winemaking to produce a single monovarietal wine based on grapes of the Godello variety.
We started with 2 hectares of vineyard and made 18,000 bottles known as Viña Godeval. In 1988 we expanded our production with the start-up of the winery inside the building known as “Monastery of Xagoaza”.
REVIVAL PROJECT
Horacio Fernández Presalaunched REVIVAL project in 1974, when he was the manager of District Agricultural Office (official institution of Spain Government). The main part of this project was the recovering of Godello variety. It was started an informative and formative program for making reality its recovery.
Xagoaza Monastery
In 1988 began works to rebuilding and refurbishment of the Monastery. This beautiful medieval building was set to turn it into the Godeval winery.
The new winery
Nowadays the winery has the most modern winemaking technology in the new facilities that it was inaugurated in 2009. Annual production is 150.000 litres, elaborated with our own vineyards.

“Visit to vineyards and winery”
Our project ViBe Godeval (life and drink in Spanish words) allows you to know our winery and its setting. This is for those interested in wine world that wanted to know us. Visits are made with previous booking and include a guide walk for the vineyards, the winery, a cave and ending with a wine tasting. We offer the opportunity to discover a jewel of Valdeorras County: our godello wine in a unique setting like Xagoaza.
The visit ends at “Cova dos Monxes”(Monks´cellar): an underground cellar, which is 100 meters from the new cellar. This cave has more than 200 years of history, it belonged to the historical complex known as “Mosteiro de Xagoaza” and the wines were kept there. A building based on the 11th century and with the Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem (Order of Malta) as part of its history. The Romanesque church of San Miguel completes a unique environment. We also advise you to discover other corners of the Valdeorras region.
